Tips and Hints for the Do it Yourselfers

  1. Insure your vehicle is permitted for use in Canada.
  2. Clear titles are a must, avoid salvage branded vehicles.
  3. Vehicles must be exported from US prior to importing to Canada.
  4. Do not drive your vehicle across the border, some temporary US tags are not valid in Canada. This creates a loop hole for insurance companies in the terrible event of an accident while using US temporary tags as the vehicle may be determined to have been illegally on the road.
  5. Be prepared to pay at the border, fees, duty and GST are all due at the border.
  6. Time is of the essence. Both the US and Canada have time lines for completing the export and import process.

Consequences for not complying with the requirements of numerous agencies from both the US and Canada may be very serious. Under certain conditions vehicles may be impounded, fines administered, vehicles denied entry or destroyed at your cost. At the very least fees and charges tend to quickly climb if you wavier from the exact requirements of exporting and importing a vehicle from the US into Canada.
