Frequently Asked Questions

Q. How long before my vehicle is in Canada?

A. 1 – 2 weeks on average.

Q. Is there duty on my vehicle?

A. Vehicles manufactured in North America (NA) are free of duty; vehicles manufactured outside of NA are subject to 6.1% duty.  If the VIN starts with a letter there is probably duty on the vehicle, but we can confirm this.

Q. Is your car insured?

A. Cargo Insurance is in place for up to $70,000 per vehicle or the declared value what ever is lower. If you require more let us know as specific arrangements may be made.

Q. May I ship personal belongings in my car?

A. No

Q. What taxes are payable on my car?

A. All Canadian taxes are applicable but vary depending on where the vehicle gets registered; in Ontario it would be the HST which is 13%. Note, you should not pay any sales tax in the US if you are not registering your vehicle there.

Q. Is my car driven to Canada?

A. No, we transport all vehicles on purpose built car carriers.

Q. Do I have to change my speedometer from miles to kilometers?

A. No it is not a requirement but it can be done for an additional fee.

Q. How do I register my US car in Canada?

A. We will complete the registration and plating of your vehicle for you, or if outside Ontario we will walk you through the process.

Q. Are there modifications required to US vehicles?

A. In some cases Yes, the most common modification would be the addition of daytime running lights (DRL’s), we provide this service.

Q. Are all trucking companies and shipping services the same?

A. No, be very careful when hiring a company to transport your vehicle. As in most things in life you get what you pay for.  If you go with a discount price you will get discount service.  What happens with freight (your car) is that a company will have multiple trucking companies bid on the job.  What generally happens is your vehicle move gets split up into multiple moves to major shipping hubs where secondary carriers take your load, sometimes to another holding yard.  We have heard of vehicles being loaded onto as many as 4 different trucks from Texas prior to it arriving to the customer in southern Ontario. This is bad, the tracking of your car is difficult and takes extra time; this loading and unloading of your car is where the any damage is likely to occur.  Shipping is not the place to cut costs, look after your investment and make sure it is shipped direct, door to door.

Q. How much experience do you have?

A. We have been incorporated since 1996 (15 years & counting) and are fully insured, we like to think of ourselves as pioneers in the purchasing and importing of US Vehicles; we are the best, we make your US vehicle purchase hassle free, like “Tim’s” we work on volume and therefore are reasonably priced.
